Gallienus, 253 - 268 AD
AE 30 of Aspendus, PamphyliaBust right /
Stele (carved commemorative stone slab)
Comment- Click
here for a drawing of
the reverse. When I saw this coin it was begging me
to look further into it's unusual reverse, with it's simple stick
figure of a temple! The city name is around the outside, with one
letter in the pediment. The stele announces that this city was
granted the title "Neokoros", or temple-warden.
(thanks Curtis!) The letters and dotted border are double-struck
on the right side. |

Severus Alexander, 221 - 235 AD
AE 32 Hexassarion of Neocaesarea, PontusLaureate
draped bust right / Two tetrastyle temples with eagles
on peaks, between them an urn with two palm branches
Comment- This huge thick coin
came with an old paper flip on which was hand-written that this
coin was mailed to the BM and the attribution was done by Martin
J. Price on 2/16/1976. COOL!! This coin is a good candidate for
professional cleaning because in-hand I can see all the details
are there, under the thick multi-colored lumps. |
