Caracalla, 196 - 217 AD
AE 29 of Amasia, PontusLaureate bust right / Large
flaming altar of two stages, tree on left
Comment- This has to be one of the most unusual reverses
I have seen. The scene is almost frightening. |

Severus Alexander, 221 - 235 AD
AE 32 of Amasia, PontusLaureate
draped bust right / Altar of Zeus Stratios surmounted by flaming
offering table upon which the bovine sacrifice lays prostrate, tree on
left
Comment- The Altar of Zeus Stratios
in Amasia was one of the most famous in the region and its flames
could be seen by sailors following the coastline of the Black Sea.
This rare variety shows the precise moment when the offering is made
to Zeus. (CNG description) |

174 - 164 BC
AE 21 of Tarsos, CiliciaCity
goddess right / Altar
of Sandan
Comment- Sandan's feet never touch
earth. He either rides the back of mythological beasts (as on this
coin), or rides on the shoulders of lesser gods. Baetyls (sacred
stone) flanking the animal. The pyramidal altar is surmounted by an
eagle. This coin is one of the many SNG Levante plate coins that have
recently become available. (956) |
