Septimius Severus, 193 - 211 AD
AE 30 of Anchialus, ThraceLaureate head right / City
gate with two towers |

Anchialus Area Ruins Photo |
Comment- This must be a side
wall of the Anchialus city wall because there is no doorway opening. Arched windows near
the top of the towers. Interesting decorations on top of the towers and the wall.

Septimius Severus, 193 - 211 AD
AE 27 of Anchialus, ThraceLaureate head right / City
gate with two towers
Comment- This coin is similar to the coin above, but this
one has only 2 blocks on top of the wall. There is no doorway opening. |

Commodus, 166 - 192 AD
AE 26 of Anchialus, ThraceBare-headed draped bust
right / City gate with windows, 2 quadrigas above
Comment- Arched doorway with closed doors. Provincials of
Commodus with city gate reverses are scarce, and this one is in great condition, if you
can ignore the fact that whoever put on the fake green patina didn't do a very good job,
they didn't get it in all the chips and crevices. |

Septimius Severus, 193 - 211 AD
AE 29 of Anchialus, ThraceLaureate head right / City
gate with two towers, Zeus standing above holding scepter and thunderbolt
Comment- Square doorway. The high spots on this coin are
worn pretty smooth, but you can still see the nice details on Zeus. |

Gordian III, 238 - 244 AD
AE 27 of Anchialus, ThraceRadiate bust right / City
gate with two towers, figure standing above holding an object
Comment- There's not enough detail for me to figure out
if the figure is Zeus holding a scepter and thunderbolt, or if it's Poseidon holding a
trident. |

Caracalla, 196 - 217 AD
AE 27 of Anchialus, ThraceLaureate, draped cuirassed
bust right / City gate with conical towers, above wall a statue of Zeus standing within
arch and holding a scepter
Comment- The doors of the gate are closed. The gate of
Anchialus is usually portrayed with a few small arches along the top of the wall.
Interesting obverse portrait, Caracalla looks like a biker! |

Geta, 198 - 212 AD
AE 28 of Anchialus, ThraceLaureate, draped bust /

Comment- 4 arches along the top of the wall. This coin
looks worse through the camera's macro lens than it does in hand. |

Gordian III, 238 - 244 AD & Tranquillina
AE 27 of Anchialus, ThraceFace to face busts / City
gate with towers
Comment- Arched doorway with wall and towers looking
similar to Gordian III gate reverses from other cities, with a few arches along the top of
the wall to identify it with Anchialus. The tooling or smoothing on this coin makes the
picture look like the camera moved, notice how the left tower top and the letters above it
seem to have a double-outline! The obverse is not so obvious, but the legend seems
extremely pronounced, and under a maginfying glass there is a double-outline around
Tranquillina's hair. |

Comment- This coin has a different treatment of the top
of the wall and the top of the towers.

Maximinus, 235 - 238 AD
AE 29 of Anchialus, ThraceLaureate, draped bust /
City gate with large windows along top and arched closed doors
Comment- Van Meter notes "the early portraits of
Maximinus were executed before a likeness of the new emperor arrived at the mint; thus,
they are pure fiction, and rather resemble Severus Alexander". This coin is an early
portrait. Maximinus was a man of "enormous physical stature", and later coins
portray him with a large chin and a beard.

Septimius Severus, 193 - 211 AD
AE 27 of Anchialus, ThraceBust right / City gate
with two towers, windows along top of wall
Comment- Quite an odd depiction of the city wall, the
closed doors take up the whole wall. This coin is my wife's favorite, because it only cost
$4. DOH!! |
