Nikopolis Area Ruins Photo |
Comment- The temple (just barely visible)
seen through the doorway of the city gate, and the large public building (on top of the
wall) actually were within the city walls. |

AE 27 of Nikopolis ad Istrum
Magistrate GallusLaureate head right / City gate and
arched building within
Comment- Another example showing a building "on
top" of the city gate. The arched building was actually within the city walls. |

Elagabalus, 218 - 222 AD
AE 26 of Nikopolis ad Istrum
Magistrate Novius RufusLaureate head right / City
gate with 2 towers, emperor in unruly quadriga above gate
Comment- The driver of the quadriga is facing
straight-on, and there is a horse on top of each tower. The little quadriga is kind of
hard to make out, but for a great picture of an "unruly" quadriga, click here. The
doors of the gate are closed. |

Elagabalus, 218 - 222 AD
AE 26 of Nikopolis ad Istrum
Magistrate Novius RufusLaureate head right / City
gate with conical towers
Comment- Not a very detailed rendition of the city gate
and towers, the letters take up a good portion of the space. Dark, almost black patina. |

Elagabalus, 218 - 222 AD
AE 26 of Nikopolis ad IstrumLaureate head right /
City gate with conical towers
Comment- The same narrow towers as the coins above. This
coin has 3 towers, and they are all the same height. The bricks and the doorway show up
better in-hand, this dark well-worn coin was difficult to photograph. |

Macrinus, 217 - 218 AD
AE 29 of Nikopolis ad Istrum
Magistrate Claudius AgrippaLaureate head right /
City gate with two towers, a third tower rising behind
Comment- The middle tower is taller on this coin, and the
towers have interesting tops. There is a pellet in each brick, and the doors of the gate
are closed. |

Diadumenian, 217 - 218 AD
AE 26 of Nikopolis ad IstrumBust right / City gate
with two towers, a third tower rising behind
Comment- Father (Macrinus above) and Son coins often look
similar. This one also has three towers, a pellet in each brick, and closed double-doors. |

Elagabalus, 218 - 222 AD
AE 21 of Nikopolis ad IstrumRadiate draped bust
right / City gate with pointed arch and two flat towers
Comment- I rarely find radiate busts. The obverse
portrait shows a very young Elagabalus with chubby cheeks. Dark black shiny patina was
difficult to photograph. |

nice. |

Gordian III, 238 - 244 AD
AE 27 of Nikopolis ad Istrum
Magistrate ModestusLaureate head right / City gate
with conical towers
Comment- The towers are actually rounded, raised off the
face of the coin. Interesting details on top of the towers and along the top of the wall. |
